WH SMITH BIRMINGHAM
(SECURE STORAGE)

Client Overview

WHSmith PLC is a leading global travel retailer specialising in news, books, and convenience products. Their business strategy focuses on continuous innovation, global expansion, improved profitability, and delivering sustainable returns. As part of this strategy, WHSmith continually refines its warehousing and logistics infrastructure to meet evolving operational and security needs.

WHSmith required the creation of a secure enclosed storage area within one of its existing distribution warehouses. The facility needed to house sensitive and high-value stock, demanding a robust and compliant solution.

The existing building presented a unique challenge with a roof apex height of 21 metres, requiring creative engineering to effectively segregate the space while maintaining compliance with Building Regulations.

Project Brief

Segregate a large, open warehouse under a 21m-high roof. Construct a walk-on enclosed roof area without compromising structure or safety. Ensure full compliance with Building Regulations and fire safety standards. Deliver the solution quickly with minimal disruption to operations.

The Challenge

Long span shelving with mesh decks

Working in close collaboration with WHSmith and their logistics partner, GXO, The Storage Centre designed and implemented a comprehensive solution combining structural, security, and electrical works.

The Solution

Once approved, the works were completed within an impressive four-week programme. The Storage Centre’s project manager worked in close coordination with GXO and WHSmith on a daily basis to ensure the project progressed seamlessly and safely.

Implementation

  • Double-skinned steel partitioning system with a PIR composite walk-on roof, self-spanning across the enclosed area (with central support for additional strength)

  • Fine fire-retardant security netting extending from the top of the partitioning to the 21m roof apex, preventing goods migration and enhancing segregation

  • Access-controlled doors and a fast-action secure warehouse door with integrated escape overrides for safety compliance

  • Development of a new fire safety plan to meet required travel distances

  • Long-span shelving with mesh decks for secure, flexible storage

  • Modifications to existing pallet racking to accommodate new configurations

  • Coordination of a Storganiser installation, gaining valuable pick locations and improving space efficiency

  • Installation of new lighting and power systems

  • Upgrade to emergency lighting to meet latest safety standards
